What certifications are required to apply with Austin/Travis County EMS?
Field Paramedic applicants are required to have a current National Registry or State Paramedic certification and must be in good standing with your State Regulatory agency. A current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification is required as well. Basic Trauma Life Support or Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support is preferred, but not required. Applicants must also possess a valid driver’s license and have no more than 7 points on their driving record within the last 3 years.

What kind of schedule does Austin/Travis County EMS Field Paramedics work?

Our system now operates on a 48 hour work week.  This will provide Austin-Travis County EMS the flexibility to offer various shift schedules that consist of 24's, a 12's, hybrids and any other shift schedules that conform to a 48 hour work week. Shift Bidding is placed on tenure with the department.  New employees will be assigned wherever the business needs permit and your assignments are subject to any shift and this shift can be changed at any time to accommodate Departmental needs. 

I’ve heard that some EMS services are being taken over by fire departments. Is this true in Austin?

ATCEMS was established as a third city service in 1976 and has operated successfully as such since that time.  Austin Fire Department and all other rural Fire Departments within Travis County operate as First Response organizations and functions under the same medical direction as we do.  We enjoy an excellent working relationship with all area Fire Departments and will continue to operate as a third city service well into the future.  



I don’t have a Texas Paramedic Certification. How do I obtain reciprocity?

What other documents are required?

Applicants must also provide a current driving record and criminal history from a state law enforcement agency.

Can I get my criminal history from a local police department or from an on-line service?
Applicant criminal histories must be obtained from a state law enforcement agency. Internet searches and local or county police department documents will not be accepted. Texas residents may do so through the Texas Department of Public Safety. Requesting your criminal history by mail can take up to 6 weeks. If you are an out-of-state resident, you must provide this documentation before you will be allowed to test. Texas residents can obtain the necessary documents within 24 hours by visiting the Texas DPS office in Austin. There is usually enough time during the Hiring Process for Texas residents to take care of these items in person. However, we prefer that this step be taken care of prior to testing. How do I obtain a criminal history if I have lived in more than one state within the last five years?
Instructions to Obtain a FBI Background Check

In order for the Criminal History obtained through the FBI to be released to Austin/Travis County EMS, you will need to do the following:

• A/TCEMS can mail you a fingerprint card with our ORI number (required to run the criminal history) printed on the card.
• If you do not have time to wait for us to mail you a card you can use a fingerprint card at your local police department but call EMS Recruiting (888) 448-2367 so we can give you our ORI number to put on the fingerprint card.
• You will need to get fingerprinted at your local police department.
• The cost to get fingerprinted at your local police department varies but it is approximately $10-15 dollars for the fingerprint card. Some departments only fingerprint by appointment and it is suggested that you call first.  Please contact ATCEMS Recruiting at 1-888-448-2367 for guidance in this process.


Who do I contact to request a driving record if I have lived in multiple states over the last three years?

You must request a state driving record from all states lived in over the last 3 years. You must contact the Department of Public Safety for each individual state that you have lived in. State certified driving records can take up to 4 to 6 weeks to reach you.

What is the best way to return my completed application to Austin/Travis County EMS Recruiting?

Do I have to live in Austin or Travis County to work for Austin/Travis County EMS?

There are no residency requirements for employment however, operational policy requires that if you are required to report to an overtime shift you must arrive to your designated station within a two hour timeframe from the moment you are contacted by the department. 

Does the City of Austin offer relocation expenses?
Currently, there are no relocation benefits offered by the City of Austin for Field Paramedic, Communications Medic or STAR Flight Nurse positions. 

What is your turnover rate?
Turnover is less than the national average as noted in the JEMS Salary Survey recently. Reasons cited by those who have left the department include continuing education, family obligations and retirement.

What kinds of advancement opportunities are there?
Field Paramedics have a variety of opportunities to pursue within our department. Special Operations, Tactical Medic, STAR Flight are just a few. Field Paramedics may also pursue career paths as Training Officers, Senior Training Officers, District Commanders, or Clinical Commanders. The EMS Department participates in Skill Based Pay. Eligible employees receive compensation in the form of a stipend for specific approved skills, which add value to a job, such as Communications Cross-Training, Field Training Officer, Rescue Technician, and Bi-Lingual testing. The skill block annual compensation ranges from $1196 to $4200.

Can I go to school while working for Austin/Travis County EMS?
The City of Austin encourages employees to further their education. After the first six months of employment, employees can receive up to $600 per long semester ($1200 per year) in tuition reimbursement. Austin/Travis County EMS recommends that employees wait until after probation to commit to education.
 


Do you have different pay scales for people with more experience or other certifications?
Yes. The City of Austin will recognize up to six years of experience for purposes of determining compensation for entry Paramedics.

What benefits does the city offer?

The City of Austin has a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, retirement, short-term disability, long-term disability, tuition reimbursement, vacation and sick leave, life insurance and alternative investments for retirement.

What is Special Operations?
Special Operations is a division within Austin/Travis County EMS Field Operations responsible for unusual rescue circumstances. EMS paramedics assigned to Special Operations maintain certifications and yearly competencies in a variety of rescue skills, including rope, swift water, confined space, technical, Haz-mat and helo-rescue. They must also maintain a specified physical conditioning level that is tested bi-annually.

How do I get into Special Operations?

Applications for the Special Operations division are accepted periodically throughout the year for our internal employees and based on need.  Applicants for Special Operations must be cleared to independent duty and pass a written and physical assessment.  



I have experience as a Flight Medic. How can I get onto STAR Flight?

Currently Flight Medic positions are awarded internally through a competitive process.  The selection is based on department performance history, written testing, physical agility testing and an interview process.  



How can I become a Tactical Medic?

There are a limited number of positions for tactical medic, and they are awarded internally as well.  Testing is similar to that of STAR Flight.  

How many hours of flight time do I need to become a pilot for STAR Flight?
Pilots must have 3000 hours of flight time. Pilots are not required to have medical training and Travis County handles the selection process for those positions. More information is listed on their website http://www.co.travis.tx.us/human_resources/jobs/default.asp .

Can I get a copy of your protocols?

You can view our newly updated Clinical Operating Guidelines online at our website for the Office of the Medical Director www.atcomd.org.  

What is the Academy like?
The Academy is approximately 13 weeks of didactic and practical training. Cadets will attend the classroom portion of the Academy from 6:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Monday – Friday. During the Academy there is a 2 week and 3 week breakout session where the Cadets will rotate into the field with their Training Officers on a 24/48 rotation. Topics covered in the Academy include Policies & Procedures, Clinical Operating Guidelines, Emergency Vehicle Operating Course, 12 Lead Interpretation, Swift & Still Water Rescue.

What happens after successfully completing the Academy?
Two Cadets are assigned to a Training Officer and will work as a member of a three-person crew.  The Cadet will then demonstrate consistent proficiency in all operational and clinical issues before being cleared to independent duty.  This process typically takes 1 - 3 months and is based on the individual cadet’s knowledge base, experience and learning style.   

What is the application process?
Applicants for Field Paramedic positions must complete a City of Austin application.   The application is available online @ the City of Austin Employment website.  You may access the online application at the following link:  www.ci.austin.tx.us/hr .  You may contact the Austin/Travis County EMS Recruiting Office at 1-888-448-2367. Applications must be received at least one week prior to the Hiring Process you wish to attend.

How long is the Hiring Process?
Applicants should make arrangements to be available for three full days. The first day consists of a 100-question multiple-choice exam. Applicants must score 75 or above to continue any further in the process. Second phase of testing is applicants moving on to complete the physical ability test. Upon completion of the PA course, the third phase of testing consists of Oral scenarios where you will be asked to address one medical scenario and one trauma scenario. You will meet with our representatives from our Clinical Practice division that will grade the scenarios that same day. Applicants who successfully pass the initial exam, scenarios and physical ability test will be given a Conditional Offer of employment. The Conditional Offer is contingent upon completing a written psychological evaluation (Day 2), follow-up psychological interview (Day 2 & 3), and oral board interview with department representatives (Day 2 & 3).

What do I need to study?

Applicants should study paramedic textbooks (i.e. Brady, Mosby’s, etc.), National Registry curriculum, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, pharmacology, pathophysiology, rhythm recognition, etc.  You will not be tested on local clinical operating guidelines.  

What is the psychological evaluation?

The psychological evaluation is a battery of questions specific to public safety.  It is used to evaluate mental and emotional fitness for the Field Paramedic position.  Depending on each applicant, the written evaluation can take 2 – 4 hours complete.  A one-hour follow-up interview with the Austin/Travis County EMS staff psychologist is conducted to clarify the findings of the written evaluation.  The specific results of the evaluation and interview are confidential, and only general information regarding fitness for the position is shared with Austin/Travis County EMS Executive Staff.  

Who are the department representatives for the oral interview?

Interviews are conducted in a panel type forum.  Representatives will include a Commander, a Training Officer, and a Recruiter.  

What is the interview like?

Interview questions are used to establish an applicant’s understanding of the EMS industry as a whole as well as Austin/Travis County EMS.  In addition, there are questions related to judgment and values.  There will not be any oral medical scenarios during the inteview.  Professional or business casual attire is acceptable.  

What happens if I fail any of the tests?
Applicants who fail one or more components of the first day of testing may retest at the next scheduled Hiring Process. If the applicant fails a retest, he or she is ineligible to test again for one year. If the candidate is not selected during the Conditional Offer phase, he or she is ineligible to reapply for one year.

When will I know if I got the job?

Once an applicant completes the interview and psychological evaluation, it takes approximately two-weeks to be notified of your status in the process.  During that time, we will verify your work history and contact your references.  All information is presented to our Candidate Recommendation Review Board and Executive Staff for final decisions.
