Communications Hiring Process Outline

  1. Typing Test
    Applicants should be able to type net thirty-five (35) words. Contact an EMS Recruiter by email or by phone at 888.448.2367 for more information.
  2. Eiligibility Verification
    A recruiter will review the application to verify that the applicant is eligible and does not
    fall under any of the disqualifiers. Once eligibility has been verified, the applicant will be scheduled for the next available testing process. Applicants scheduled for a testing process will need to contact Recruiting within forty-eight hours of the testing process date should there be a need to reschedule. Applicants who fail to give proper notice will be ineligible for the testing process for one year.

    Note: Steps 3 and 4 are conducted in the morning of the first day in the process.
    Applicants who successfully pass these steps will receive a conditional offer and proceed in the hiring process. Oral Interviews will be scheduled that afternoon. The Psychological Evaluation will be conducted the morning of the second day of the process and applicants will schedule a time for the Psychological Interview that week.
  3. Written EMT Exam
    Applicants will be required to take a 50-question multiple choice BLS exam. Questions will be taken from major EMT texts (Emergency care, Mosby's, etc), National Standards (United States Department of Transportation, etc.); and other professional standards (PHTLS, etc.). A score of 80% is required to continue in the hiring process.
  4. CRITICALL
    The CRITICALL is a computerized multitasking exercise. Applicants will be asked to complete several tasks such as writing and verbalizing information. Applicants must score a 80 or better on every one of the modules and must have an overall average of 80+. Upon completion of the test, applicants will be told their score and will be informed of their pass/fail status.
  5. Conditional Offer of Employment
    Applicants who successfully pass the Written Exam and CRITICALL will receive a
    conditional offer of employment. This offer is contingent upon the following:
    • Applicant must complete the Psychological Evaluation.
    • Applicant must receive a recommendation for hire from the Candidate Review Board
    • Applicant must receive final approval for hire from the Executive Director of ATCEMS.
    • Applicant must pass the Physical Examination
    • Applicant must remain eligible for employment between the date conditional employment is offered and the next available Training Academy class according to the minimum qualifications established by the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services Department, and that no information pertaining to the applicant comes to the attention of the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services Department that would cause the department to revokes its conditional offer.

  6. Written Psychological Evaluation
    Applicants will complete a series of written questionnaires designed to measure a variety of personality and psychological factors related to emergency medical service work. The results of these questionnaires will be reviewed, scored, and used to provide the psychologist with information for the applicant's personal interview.
  7. Oral Interview
    The interview is designed to assess the applicant's ability to function successfully as a
    Communications Medic. The applicant may be asked questions designed to demonstrate certain knowledge, skills, and abilities considered basic to effective performance as a Communications Medic.
  8. Psychological Interview
    The staff psychologist will interpret the written psychological questionnaires and use this information as well as other information learned about the applicant during the hiring process as a basis for the interview. The interview is designed to assess the applicant's mental and emotional fitness to function successfully as a Communications Medic with the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services Department.
  9. Background Investigation
    A thorough background investigation is conducted to establish evidence of good moral
    character, a well-adjusted personality and a pattern of conduct acceptable to the Austin- Travis County Emergency Medical Services Department.
  10. Physical Examination
    Upon successful completion of the preceding steps in the hiring process and upon
    receiving a formal offer of employment the applicant will participate in a complete physical examination prior to their first day of employment. The physical exam will assess the applicant's physical condition to ensure he/she can function safely as a Communications Medic.
